MapSherpa is sponsoring the upcoming Georgian Bay Storm Gathering in October – a season-ending event for intermediate level and instructor paddlers. Because of this we thought we would make the Georgian Bay the focus of our Topo Map of the Week.

Map of Georgian Bay Region

Georgian Bay is a bay of Lake Huron in Ontario, Canada. It is located east of the Bruce Peninsula and south of Manitoulin Island. The Georgian Bay region features two very distinct geographies.

Maps of the Canadian Shield Section

The geography to the east and north are part of the Canadian Shield. Over 30,000 islands dot the shoreline along the eastern shore. The rolling landscape of the Canadian Shield dominates the land. On the first of our featured maps you can see the region north west of Parry Sound focused on Snug Harbour where the Georgian Bay Storm Gathering will be taking place.

Maps of Bruce Peninsula

To the west of Georgian Bay, a very different geography is found on the Bruce Peninsula with the major geographic feature being the extension of the Niagara Escarpment. A terrain map of Wiarton, Ontario and the nearby cliffs of the Niagara Escarpment along Georgian Bay showcases this dramatic scenery.
