Many people think of the prairie landscape as being flat and featureless. But the truth is incredibly different. Edmonton certainly does not fit this stereotype. As the capital of Alberta, it’s central district is bisected by the North Saskatchewan River.
To the north is Edmonton’s financial and business district and to the south are popular shopping and entertainment districts.
Topography of Edmonton’s North Saskatchewan Valley

The river valley is bound by steep slopes that provide varied terrain for Edmonton’s River Valley Park – an urban park more than 20 times the size of New York’s Central Park. It represents the longest stretch of connected urban parkland in North America! The 7,400 hectare (18,000 acre), 25 kilometre (15.5 mi) long river valley park system includes eleven lakes, fourteen ravines, and twenty-two major urban parks.
Overall, the park has 150km of trails catering to many activities including walking, jogging, biking and cross country skiing.
