Canoeing Barron Canyon Day 4 – Barron River
The final day of our trip has arrived, and although we’ll be sad to say good bye to Opalescent Lake for another year – awaiting us was the Barron Canyon, arguably the most majestic and stunning scenery in all of Algonquin Park.
In order to get to the Barron River, which runs through the Barron Canyon, we had a couple of portages and a brief canoe throughBrigham Lake to be completed. Once on the Barron River we could take our time canoeing through the canyon and enjoying the 300 foot cliffs that enclosed us, and the eerie silence around us. Nowhere else have I been able to so clearly imagine how powerful the retreating glaciers of the ice age must have been as they carved out this enormous canyon 10,000 years ago.
As our paddle continued along the Barron River, and the cliffs began to disappear, our final landing was drawing nearer. A brief portage to get around the Cache Rapids was our last haul of our gear before our final destination at Squirrel Rapids where one of our cars waited for us.
A great trip ended – we packed our cars, already anticipating living it all over again the following year.
