Maps of Algonquin Park
Algonquin Park is one of the most popular destinations in Ontario for outdoor enthusiasts of all kinds. Originally established in 1893 as a provincial park in Ontario, the park has evolved from what was primarily a logging region to today’s major focus on use for recreational activities.
The park has made a strong priority of managing large volumes of visitors while preserving the park’s natural beauty and environment.
Geography
Algonquin Park is located between Georgian Bay on the west and the Ottawa River along the north-east. The region is part of the Canadian Shield with it’s topography heavily influenced by the melting of the glaciers after the last ice age. This has left a rugged landscape with over 2000 lakes, rivers and ponds within the park.
A number of rivers have their head waters within the park including the Amable du Fond River, Barron River, Bonnechere River, Madawaska River, Magnetawan River, Muskoka River, Petawawa River, and York River.
Activities
Many outdoor activities are encouraged at the park during all seasons:
- Cross Country Skiing and Snowshoeing are popular winter activities within the park
- Canoeing, fishing, day hiking, mountain biking and horseback riding are among the many popular spring, summer and fall activities
