Jones Falls on Rideau Canal – Day Hike

Last weekend my wife and I decided to check out a new section of the Rideau Canal system – a 202 km long network of canals, rivers and lakes connecting Ottawa with Kingston in Ontario.  The system was developed in the 1800’s and is the oldest continuously operated canal system in North America.  Last year it was recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.

I used MapSherpa to create a couple maps of the Jones Falls section of the Rideau Canal.  Jones Falls is interesting because of the dam that was constructed to manage the water flow. At the time of its construction in 1832 the construction techniques were unique and when finished it was the tallest dam in North America (19.5m). Stone Arch Dam

The ability to create maps at a couple different scales allowed me to have both a regional picture and a detailed map of the local area around the Jones Falls locks.  As an example, one map I created shows some of the local detail around Jones Falls.
